Read-Aloud

We like to read aloud to our kids, even long after they can read by themselves, just because it's a great bonding time. Plus, it's a different experience to hear a book read aloud than just reading it silently.

Some books are great for reading aloud, and others just aren't as good. Last year I read "The Penderwicks" to my kids. It's a great story, lots of fun and adventure, and absolutely nothing bad. All of my kids enjoyed it, and I quite enjoyed it myself. I am reading the sequel to them now, "The Penderwicks on Gardam Street." It's great fun. I highly recommend both books.

What books have you found to be great for reading aloud to your kids?

  1. I am a long time Lurker-- I think I found you back before the crash through NieNie--

We too, enjoy reading to our children-- our favorites are definitely the Mrs. Piggly Wiggley books, and a wonderful series that we found at our local LDS book store-- the Jimmy Fincher series-- very exciting.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

  5. I too am a read aloud-er! :) Every summer we have 2 hours of R & R (reading and resting) where I read to my boys for an hour, and then they read to themselves their own book. We also listen to books on tape any time we're in the car (we have a 20 minute drive to and from school, so we've actually listened to probably more than 100 books over the years). The Great Brain series is very good! Loved those. We listened to all the Harry Potters. I've read Little Britches (an old but wonderful book!), Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles, Where the Red Fern Grows, Peter and the Starcatchers, Little House books, Walk Two Moons, Because of Winn Dixie, A Small White Scar, Love Ruby Lavender, and LOTS more! If you're ever needing suggestions, just ask me! Read aloud is my favorite time of day in my classroom, too.
